To view an article listed in the results pages, click on an article heading. When viewing the text in an article, you will see your search term(s) highlighted in red. Tables of Contents A table of contents for each article always appears in the frame to the
left of the article text so you can easily return to any place within
that article. Use the scroll bar to move down through the headings and
click on a heading to open that section of the article. You can also click
on the Article tab in the top grey navigation bar to return to the article
at any time. Cross-references Cross-references within articles are highlighted in a different colour and appear in small capital letters. Click on the highlighted text to navigate to the article or section to which it refers. Illustration and figure references are highlighted in green. Click on the highlighted text to view the image in a new window. Note: Many illustrations in The Dictionary
of Art are not available in Grove Art Online for copyright reasons.
Where they are not available, cross-references to illustrations and figures
will not be highlighted. Searching within an article When viewing an article, select Article Search from the grey navigation bar at the top of the article to search for a term only within the article you are currently viewing. Search results for the all instances of the term within the current article will be displayed. This is particularly useful for longer articles. Dates Dates in Grove Art Online are listed by day/month/year. All new articles, updates and revisions are noted by dd/mm/yyyy in the
upper right hand corner of the article page. Illustrations The Illustrations tab in the
top grey navigation bar allows you to view a list of maps, charts and
colour images related to the article. For copyright reasons Grove Art
Online cannot show all the illustrations which appear in print or are
referenced in the article. Click on a caption to view the image. Image Links The Image Links tab is located in the top grey navigation bar. This page provides links to the search pages of the Art Resource image database (over 90,000 art images) and Bridgeman Art Library image database (over 100,000 art images). This page also provides a list of editorially selected links to images on public websites related to the article. Abbreviations Enter the abbreviation you wish to find in the Find Abbrevs box in the navigation bar across the top of the screen and then click Find Abbrevs. The selected term will be displayed, with the full meaning appearing
beneath the abbreviation in the left-hand frame. To display the article
Table of Contents click on Back
to Table of Contents. You may also view a list of all abbreviations
by selecting Browse Appendices.
Navigating an article Use the arrows at the right-hand side of the top grey navigation bar or, in a large article, move directly to a chosen section from the table of contents displayed automatically in the left-hand frame. Related articles Choose Related Articles from the top grey navigation bar to view the list of related articles drawn from the Index. From the related articles view, click on an article title to view that article. To return to the original article click on the Back button in your browser.
